Text: Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Fourth Edition, by David C. Lay. ISBN-13: 978-0-321-38517-8

Course goal: The general topics we will cover in this class are systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, and vector spaces. There are many models of biological, economical, or physical systems which are quite complicated mathematically. No matter what the model, though, it is frequently approximated by a linear system in practice. The unifying theme of this class is to study such linear systems from various points of view (algebraically, computationally, and geometrically).

Tests: There will be two mid-semester tests: the tentative date for the first one will be March 3 (Thursday) . The second test will be April 12 (Tuesday). Make-up tests are only given in extreme circumstances such as documented serious illness or personal circumstance. I must review such cases prior to the start of the test.

Final Exam: final exam will be offered on Wednesday May 4, 2-5pm. Location TBD.

Homework/Quizzes: There will be weekly homework assignments. They are collected in class at every Thursday. Selected homework problems will be graded, and completeness will also be checked. Late homework will carry a penalty of 20% per late day. Pop up quizzes will be given, which contain problems from homework-like problems. We cannot emphasize the importance of homework enough. Although understanding material while you read the text or listen to lecture is certainly important, your most important studying will be in completing the homework assignments.

Attendance: Regular attendance is critical for your success in this course. I expect your presence at every lecture.

Grading: Your final grade is calculated as follows:

Honor Code: Students will uphold William and Mary's stated honor code as it is written, any infractions will be referred to the Honor Council.
